The Global Goals for Sustainable Development
WHAT ARE THE GLOBAL GOALS?
On 25th September 2015, leaders from 193 member states of the United Nations, met to discuss the world’s problems and decide on a plan to tackle them. They named this plan the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (commonly known as the Global Goals).
Take a look at the following comic, read carefully and answer the questions:
1. Which of the 17 global goals do you identify in the University or in your community?
2. How could you contribute to tackling that challenge?

1. Which of the 17 global goals do you identify in the University or in your community?
ReplyDeleteIn the university, I identify the following goals:
• 3. Good health and well being
• 4. Quality education
• 5. gender equality
• 8. Decent work and economic growth
• 9. Industry innovation and infrastructure
• 10. Reduced inequalities
Of course, there are other goals that are more or less directly linked to the university. One could even say that the university could be implied in any of these 17 sustainable goals. Since the university is responsible for the formation of tomorrow’s qualified workers, it is natural it has an impact on all life aspects.
The goals I think should be more present in the university are:
• 11. sustainable cities and communities
• 12. Responsible consumption and production
• 13. Climate action
• 15. Life on land
2. How could you contribute to tackling that challenge?
To tackle these challenges, I should always keep in mind the need to keep a critical and social spirit.
I believe that if we keep challenging everything we learn, we keep an independent spirit. This is especially important for women. Since our childhood, the large majority of success figures and heroes we had were men. It is therefore important not to limit oneself to what we see, or to reproduce old models. Challenging is moving forward. Challenging is improving.
Then, I strongly believe one should always consider the social and environmental impacts of what he does. It is too easy to comply with its employer’s view and discharge oneself of its personal responsibility. For example, if I work in a company as manager and my boss asks me to reduce costs through firing employees. I should consider the disastrous impacts of my action and consider other options. Same goes for environment. If I’m in charge of a plant, I should make sure its implementation won’t hurt the surrounding ecosystem.
On a more practical way, in the university, I try to keep an open mind and listen and learn from every person I meet. Sharing is also a key aspect in open mindedness. I try to study subjects to develop my critical spirit. On the environmental aspects, I avoid wasting any food. On the health aspect, I also impede myself from buying snacks all day long for my health. And I try to practice sports as much as I can to stay on good health.
The one specific problem I identify in the university is health and nutrition. Although a lot of students practice sports and the cafeteria offers equilibrated meals (with vegetarian option), I also see a lot of person eating snacks all day long. There are automatic machines that deliver them 24/7 which I consider is very dangerous for one´s health. These machines are a source of temptation for everybody. It also preoccupying that young students (below and around 18) have such easy access to it.
DeleteFurthermore, beyond the fact eating all day long isn´t recommendable for health, these machines, or other food shops, offer a lot of unhealthy food. Here in Medellin, the proportion of fried food is incredibly high. Empanadas for example. And when it is not fried, it is very sweet or greasy. Croissant are cholesterol bombs! And what about sweet juice available at every corner?
The thing is, this food, although unhealthy, is very tasty and seems to be part of the culture. For myself, I try to limit my consumption of snacks. I impede myself from buying anything from machines (except from coffee). I also try not to buy snacks at the cafeteria and try to make equilibrated and healthy meals three times a day. Fortunately, the cafeteria or restaurants available offer good and healthy meals. I try to take advantage of it not to eat between meals.
Hi Julie, I like what you say about the importance of women let's have an independent spirit and begin to have references of female success, the role of women has been very important but has been hidden for centuries.
Delete1. Consumption and production.
ReplyDeleteI identify this problem in all the globe because is a big problem in some parts of the world consumption is excessive, generating a lot waste. While in other parts of the world the consumption is still insufficient to
meet the basic needs of the population.
This problem is terrible all the days increases demand then all days increases the production, producing more garbage and increasing the exploitation of nature resources.
2. - I will not buy unnecesaty things.
- I can teach people to recycle to reuse materials and avoid using new materials.
- Only I will buy the food that to need.
Responsible consumption and production
ReplyDeleteOne of the theories about climate change, is that we consume more that we can discard or have control.
A lot of times we are so ansouis and we feel the needing to buy food or unnecessary things, it is so bad for the planet and for the campus.
I can see a lot people who bring their lunch or other that use bicycle to arrive at the university.
My mom say, when you are going to buy something, you have to think first what will happen if you don't buy it, if nothing happens, you don't need it.
it is a very good way to identify which things you really need.
This could be more important that reduce our birth rate, because, if we control our garbage, and our resources we could have a very nice planet for all the people.
I like to eat fruits and food that don't have paking, I like to cook my food and I have a garden with plants that serves to feed me or give me drinks. I really like to bring with me my water thermos beaucse is very important to feed our body with water and with this aternative we arent polluting
Mario Franco: I identify in my community, specifically in Medellin the following Globlal goals challenges:
ReplyDelete1) No poverty: a lot of people in our city don´t have health care access or are unemployment.
4) Quality education: no of all guys that graduated from high school have the opportunity to go to Universities.
10) Reduce inequalities: we have a lot of people from other cities and neigbourh countries that come to live here and we have to make plans and say everybody Welcome you have rights!
16) Peace and Justice: There are some places or special problems in Medellin where the violence still affecting people and children, so the goal is end all forms of violence.
I could contribute with my carreer for tackling the challenge because I will have the opportunity to create alternatives and projects against the problems in industry innovations and responsive production creating new jobs. In other hand, everyone have the challenge of be a good citizen with tolerance and respect to end the violence in our neighbourhood and city.
The main problem that I identify in my community is about poverty. There are a lot of people in our city that don't have acces to Health care or it´s difficult to get all services. For example when people go to hospital or health care places there are many inconvenients like no many doctors or medicine. By the other hand, the rates of unemployment are continuously growing and there isn't plans to protect people when get fail from their jobs.
Delete1.
ReplyDeleteOne of the main problems what I observe in the university and on the world scene is the lack of gender equity, women despite the many efforts that have been made around female empowerment, continue to be undervalued and degraded.
In turn the stage of conflict and violence that occur due to disagreements with the government, weakened institutions and eliminate the possibilities of peace and justice in the country. The education sector has been generating problematics because of this what require a quick solution.
2. How could you contribute to tackling that challenge?
I propose as a solution to the problem of gender inequality to build debate scenarios where there is true female empowerment, actions that demonstrate the importance of women in the world, greater inclusion in administrative positions, equitable salaries, and more participation are required active of women in all sectors. As a woman, I must begin to change my mind, eliminate the patriarchal structure of my daily actions, recognize my importance in the world, and begin to treat everyone equally.
About the problem of bad government in the country that generates transversal problems of violence in the education sector, I propose to carry out actions against the government, the people must unite and protest, they must show their disagreement with current policy. Workshops should be held with the communities to publicize the legal mechanisms of action and propose alternatives for government change and new action plans from the administration, in this case the education sector. I can contribute to the change by starting to have more political awareness, making my participation in the mobilization spaces knows, building a voice of protest and struggle.
The problem that I would like to work on is gender inequality.
Deletehello Fernanda, although I wrote on health I would love to talk to you about this topic on gender equality! =)
Delete1. Which of the 17 global goals do you identify in the University or in your community?
ReplyDeleteI identify the 13 global goals and its “Climate action” because right now for example in Medellin but also in the Valle de aburra, the pollution have one of the highest levels in Colombia and the most of control points in the city have a red level of pollution and the CO2 that cars produce are one of the reasons for that climate is changing drastically.
We can develop this with some actions, for example to use the public transport such as Metro or the differents buses that pass in our zone, because is necessary to decrease the use of a personal cars if you travel alone. Also the major of the city could change the old buses of the city and buy a electric cars or to help the people with lending some money to change their cars. The idea is leave to use the fossil fuel and try to use a renobal energies.
2. How could you contribute to tackling that challenge?
First I could use every time the public transport because it's not necessary to use for example my father's car when i come to the university alone. Also with teach or talk with other people about this problems, because some person dont worry about this problem because they think that it's not a problem and it doesn't affected them.
The problem that I would like to work on is gender inequality.
Delete1. Which of the 17 global goals do you identify in the University or in your community?
ReplyDeleteIn my community, I identify 7 global goals
Good health and well-being.
Quality education.
Gender Equality.
Industry, innovation and infrastructure.
Consumption and production.
Climate action.
Life land.
I think that consumption and production is a big problem in my community, bad waste separation which makes recycling more difficult, as well as the final disposal of these.
2.A possible solution is generate education strategies that make people perform a good separation of waste to recycle them, also propose to implement a better management of this waste that can generate money, for example, organic waste can be used in compost and the other waste can be sold and recycled by companies that are dedicated to recycling. In this way the waste would be used better.
1) In my university I identify the goal 3: Good health and well-being.
ReplyDeleteBecause every month, wellfare university give us an opportunity to do a diagnostic to know how is our organism. Also, they talk us about how we can protec ourselves and how we can overcome the additives.
Besides, the students are doing more sports and they're having a good nutrition.
2)I can contibute to tackling that challenge don't ingesting products that can affect my body, like liquor or psychoactives substances. Also, I will go to the diagnostic to know how is my body and, if I hace a disease, don't infect other people.
also, I can do more sports to keep my body healthy and invite others to do it, too.
1. I identify the goal 15 (life on land)
ReplyDelete2. The possible solutions:
-Reforestation campaigns, this activity capture 25% of global annual carbon emissions.
-Raise awareness about the problem, this is achieve with education.
-Reduction livestock farming, this activity soil compaction and reduce the water infiltration.
-Improve the education, this is the most important because the others depend of this.
1. Which of the 17 global goals do you identify in the University or in your community?
ReplyDeleteI think that the global goals of the United Nations that are realized in my university are:
The quality education is the main goal of our university, and this corresponds to the 4 global goal.
The number 1: no poverty, the education is an anti-poverty mechanism.
Bienestar Universitario also combats hunger through feeding programs, which corresponds to the 2 global goal and the Área de Salud promotes good health and well-being, which in turn is the 3 global goal.
Gender equity is also provided in our university with an inclusive education, and this corresponds to the 5 global goal. The university also promotes decent work and economic growth, that is, the 8 global goal, and industry, innovation and infrastructure through quality education, the latter corresponds to the 9 global goal.
With education, inequality is reduced, so also from the university it contributes to the 10 global goal.
Finally, the university has made important contributions to the peace treaty between the FARC-EP and the Government, and other social conflicts, contributing in this way to peace and justice, the global goal number 16.
The Universidad Nacional of Colombia is a strategic partner for the fulfillment of the global goals, therefore, it contributes to the global goal number 17.
2. How could you contribute to tackling that challenge?
We can all contribute by following each of the guidelines established in the global goals with social responsibility. It is important to exercise the climate action through responsible consumption and production, taking care of water resources and making use of the methodology called the 3 R rule: Reduce, Reuse and Recycle.
Hi Oscar, I see that we have in common the interest in gender equality. I would like to talk with you about it.
Delete1. Which of the 17 global goals do you identify in the University or in your community?
ReplyDelete• I think that at the University we have strategies to remedy hunger, allowing some people to have breakfast and lunch through “Bienestar académico”
• My mother has a vegetables store and she collects the used oils from the clients so that they are not dumped in the rivers and in this way helps to conserve clean waters.
2. How could you contribute to tackling that challenge?
The problem is the education, so it is necessary to help educate people about the solutions we can deal with the problems that the world has, I think that can sensitize people with my way of acting
1. The problem that I saw in my community but principally in my country is something general and very obviously. Basically I can see how in my country the corruption is very abundant and anybody do something to repair this situation, so I think the goal that my country need to apply are:
ReplyDelete-Peace and justice: we need to put finish at the war and the corruption.
2. The first is remember that I am only a student and I can not to do a big things, I am not a president but I can try helping with little things, first helping at my family with information about politics or to choose decisions around this. And we can like university join us to fight with the government to do better this country.
1) Which of the 17 global goals do you identify in the University or in your community?
ReplyDeleteHunger(2): normally the people that don’t have been in la guajira thinks “that´s a dessert with people dying for hunger” it is the reality but not at all, that’s usually happens in any communities that have any problems to get foot for his natives customs, mybae because they don’t have enough work, but too because they don’t want to leave their natives works and it don’t give then the enough money for the support of their families
2) How could you contribute to tackling that challenge?
In my position of student I just can include in my live project some campaings to intent reduces the hunger, or try to benefit and reduce that’s problems from my enginery position, because now I can’t make anything to solve that’s problems or to make something that reality affect it positively
. Some people do not have access to the things that a citizen should have. The city has no companies to generate formal jobs and corruption of politicians who steal money from things like health and humanitarian programs, so access is limited.
ReplyDeleteClean water and sanitation The city has no aqueduct, so people must survive with rainwater and rivers. The rivers are contaminated by the extraction of minerals such as gold.
2. I could contribute by joining a foundation that is responsible for doing things for poor people, how to obtain resources to take people to markets and advise on how they can claim their rights as "custody" when they have violated a job in a hospital etc.
My answers:
ReplyDelete1. In my environment, I can identify that we can apply more the global goals number 14, 15 and 16.
But specially the goal 16 “Peace and Justice Strong Institutions”.
I can identify this problem in all our country, because everyone knows the insecurity in the streets, and the law don´t do anything to solve it, when they caught a criminal, they release him in some hours and that person still being a problem for all us. Even with the great groups of criminals the government don´t gives them a punishment or strong law only say that they only have to apologize when that don´t help the victims with their losses and their feels.
2. In my opinion, I can´t contribute much to change these things, because it is a great problem that our country have so many years ago, but if every people try to change that insufficiency we can change that situation of our government.
Which of the 17 global goals do you identify in the University or in your community?
ReplyDelete1. My community problems are centered in two global goals: Quality education (4) and reduce inequalities (10). The first goal and the last goal are very similar (in this case). I think that in all Colombian Cities have this problems. The West education (Exactly South America) have inequalities. I see this problems when in my neighborhood somebody can’t study for your few recourses (they don’t have money, the difficulty at transport, some have to work, etc), this point is connected with the goal 1 (no poverty), a problem related with inequalitie.
How could you contribute to tackling that challenge?
2. I can to contribute recognizing at all people as equals, with equals opportunities and rights. If we can to recognize and to respect this topic we can live in community and we can to have same rights, so all people can study without problems.
1. Which of the 17 global goals do you identify in the University or in your community?
ReplyDeleteThe objectives to be achieved in my university are equality, I do not agree that economic, food and accommodation aid is only for a few, another objective is to improve the quality of education by hiring more teachers, since that many students are unable to register many subjects due to lack of quotas. In my community, the main objective is to reduce poverty and improve living conditions, so that people have access to education and have more opportunities
2. How could you contribute to tackling that challenge?
for now I could only attend the marches peacefully and continue studying taking advantage of my opportunity to get ahead
Which of the 17 global goals do you identify in the University or in your community?
ReplyDelete3) Good health and well-being: In general our health system is very preventive, then the problem is access to treatment.
4) Quality education: we have public school and for the university there are scholarship and initiatives for digital education.
6) Clean water and sanitation: Now we have clean water, sewage and garbage collection in many places and the goal is to expand the coverage.
7,12,13) In general we have projects for help the planet. For example in transport and energy.
16) Peace and justice: the most of the new generation want a society in peace and since the signing of the peace agreements is our big goal.
2. How could you contribute to tackling that challenge?
I think that change is inside each one. So, I can start to be more aware about my habitual consumption and start to stop or change the use of no renewable materials. Another thing, could be with my carreer, I study economy and I can investigate and propouse solutions and helps for our region. The most important is share the good practices for take care of the planet because more and more peoble have to help
