Food Waste Smart Solutions

Colombia is a privileged country regarding its geographic location. The different types of land and temperatures allow producing a great diversity of meals including fruits, vegetables, and cereals, among others. In other words, food is abundant and it is usually fresh. Because of this and because of our cultural heritage it is common to waste food in many homes. It is said that an average family wastes 2 liters of food a day and it is not right that it goes directly to the landfills. It cannot be ignored and as aware consumers, we need to take smart actions at home in order to change this reality. The first action is the reduction of food waste by consuming all the food that we buy. The second action consists of getting a home appliance that turns organic waste into energy. Nowadays, there is an Israeli company called HomeBioGas3 that offers biodigesters that transform organic waste into cooking gas. These two actions could considerably help reduce this global issue and the government could also play their part by educating communities on food waste reduction and also on designing a project to provide biodigesters for the people’s homes.
