Speaking task: A proposal for the mayor

Speaking Task – Level 4

Summative assessment (10%)
Due date: October 24

Task:  You and your partners are invited to present a proposal for the new mayor of the city to solve some university or community challenges. Your proposal will be presented in UNtelevision.

Purpose:   Describe a challenge, its causes, its effects, and the idea you have to tackle.

Situation:  You and your partners are invited to talk about a challenge that you have identified and the entrepreneurial idea you have to tackle the issue. 

To sucessfully develop this task you should:

Record a video per project team. In your video you will include:

1. Introduce yourself: What are your names? What do you study? what are your academic interests? Do you belong to a research or study group?

2. Define what the challenge is (causes and effects):
We identify (define what the challenge is). Some of its main causes are… One of its effects is… another is… and the last one is…

3. Solution (entrepreneurial idea)
To solve that problem, explain what your entrepreneurial idea is about by answering the following questions:
 -  What are you developing?
we are (planning/starting/growing) an entrepreneurial idea (fill in your project name) which is a (website? device? mobile app? campaign?)
- How did you come up with the idea?
- How are you going to solve the problem?
We will contribute to solving this problem by (explain what you will do differently or uniquely)
- Who is your solution addressed to? (fill in your target audience here)

In order to prepare your proposal, write a problem-solution paragraph. It will also be part of your project proposal.

A problem-solution paragraph  example

Food Waste Smart Solutions Colombia is a privileged country regarding its geographic location. The different types of land and temperatures allow producing a great diversity of meals including fruits, vegetables, and cereals, among others. In other words, food is abundant and it is usually fresh. Because of this and because of our cultural heritage it is common to waste food in many homes. It is said that an average family wastes 2 liters of food a day and it is not right that it goes directly to the landfills. It cannot be ignored and as aware consumers, we need to take smart actions at home in order to change this reality. The first action is the reduction of food waste by consuming all the food that we buy. The second action consists of getting a home appliance that turns organic waste into energy. Nowadays, there is an Israeli company called HomeBioGas3 that offers biodigesters that transform organic waste into cooking gas. These two actions could considerably help reduce this global issue and the government could also play their part by educating communities on food waste reduction and also on designing a project to provide biodigesters for the people’s homes.
